Course Content
The subjects offered within ES11 cover well beyond the content of the regular Grade 11 course load, and will be taught in a manner that integrates class work, science projects, and field studies. ES11 is a demanding program offering considerable rewards and enriching experiences for those who are prepared to accept the challenges.
ES11 Semester
Course Descriptions
Life Science11
The Biology 11 course addresses basic methods and principles of biology, genetics, population ecology, and a survey of the biology of viruses and the five kingdoms of living organisms. The course will integrate field activities, lab studies, projects, lectures and readings. Biology labs will normally be offered in the Yukon College setting.
Chemistry 11
Chemistry 11 is an introductory course in the study of chemistry. Major topics include: The scientific method, measurement in science, theory of matter, atomic structure, the mole, chemical bonding, chemical reactions, and solution chemistry. Chemistry labs will normally be offered in the Yukon College setting
Physical Geography 12
The Geography 12 course introduces students to the nature of geography. We will look at weather systems, climate and the world, tectonic processes, gradation processes, management of natural resources as well as sustainability of natural resources in Canada and the world.
Active Living 11
The Physical Education course will introduce students to a wide range of physical activities outside of the gymnasium in order to develop a healthy active lifestyle. Activities such as scuba diving, sailing, surfing, hiking, and other outdoor activities are normally part of the curriculum.
Visual Art 11
The Visual Art course provides students with two and three dimensional activities, focusing on landscape sketching, scientific and field illustration, and watercolour techniques. Other visual art activities could include antler/horn jewelry making, sculpting, fur sewing, glass blowing, and blacksmithing.
Field Studies 12
The Field Studies course provides students with the opportunity to meet with a wide variety of scientific professionals. Structured field notes are an expected part of each activity which sees students working alongside the guest presenters. Students will have the opportunity to learn the tools and techniques to properly perform aquatic studies, beach transects, forestry plots, capture-mark-recapture, population modelling and calculation, as well as many other activities in the field.
